About this cartoon...
Here are two cartoon soldiers that were commissioned recently by SSAFA, the armed forces charity. There were six soldiers in all, each depicting a different period in English military history.
Each of the soldiers would be used on a pop-up banner, containing the cartoon and some fun historical facts.
Creating the cartoon soldiers
Each of the soldiers were created firstly as pencil sketches, before adding all colours and outlines digitally.
I wanted to depict a friendlier and more realistic feel to these cartoons, compared to my usual style.
One of the main features of this was to have the eyes spaced apart and also using coloured outlines, as opposed to my usual solid black.
A strong camouflage pattern was then created and applied tot he uniforms, making for a rich coverage.
